Dataset Examples

These are examples of the types of custom datasets we can research, collect, and deliver. Each project is scoped individually. Feasibility depends on source availability, scope, and timeline.

Please note: These examples illustrate possible dataset types — they are not pre-built products. Every request is reviewed for feasibility before a proposal is prepared. Not all datasets are available, complete, or lawful to collect in all jurisdictions.

Licensed Business Directories

A directory of licensed businesses in a specific sector and geography — for example, electricians licensed in Ontario, or cannabis retailers in BC.

Sources
Provincial licensing bodies, municipal business licence databases, open data portals
Possible Fields
Business name, licence number, licence type, address, municipality, province, postal code, status, issue date, expiry date
Deliverables
CSV, Excel, data dictionary
Feasibility
Availability varies by province and licence type. Some data is published; some requires manual aggregation.

Environmental Permit Datasets

Environmental permits, approvals, and registrations for industrial or commercial operations subject to federal or provincial environmental regulation.

Sources
Federal and provincial environmental registries (e.g., ECCC, BC ENV, Ontario MECP)
Possible Fields
Facility name, permit type, issue date, status, regulated activity, location, coordinates, regulating authority
Deliverables
CSV, GIS/spatial, source list
Feasibility
Federal data is generally well-published. Provincial completeness varies.

Public Sector Employee Directories

Published employee directories for Crown corporations, municipalities, or government departments — limited to what is lawfully and publicly disclosed.

Sources
Government websites, ATIP disclosures, open government datasets, published organizational charts
Possible Fields
Name (where published), title, department, organization, contact information (where published)
Deliverables
CSV, Excel
Feasibility
Limited to what is lawfully published. Does not include private employee data.

Municipal Service Datasets

Locations and details of municipal services — libraries, recreation centres, fire stations, transit stops, and similar public facilities.

Sources
Municipal open data portals, 311 datasets, government GIS portals
Possible Fields
Facility name, type, address, municipality, coordinates, operating hours (where available), contact
Deliverables
CSV, GIS/spatial, data dictionary
Feasibility
Major municipalities have well-maintained open data. Smaller municipalities vary.

Industry Location Datasets

Locations of businesses in a specific industry within a defined geography — useful for market mapping, competitive analysis, and spatial planning.

Sources
Business registries, open data portals, published directories, government licensing data
Possible Fields
Business name, category, address, city, province, postal code, coordinates (geocoded)
Deliverables
CSV, Excel, GIS/spatial
Feasibility
Coverage depends heavily on source availability by sector and province.

Historical Public Records

Historical records from government publications — zoning decisions, permit logs, archived public notices, gazette entries, and similar time-bound public documents.

Sources
Government archives, gazette publications, digitized records, ATIP/FOI responses
Possible Fields
Vary by record type. Typically include date, reference number, decision, parties (where public), jurisdiction
Deliverables
CSV, data dictionary, source list
Feasibility
Historical data availability varies significantly. Digitization quality affects completeness.

Facility and Branch Location Datasets

A complete map of all locations for a retail chain, service provider, or government agency — useful for coverage analysis, network mapping, or supply chain planning.

Sources
Official websites, open data portals, published location data, government directories
Possible Fields
Location name, brand/chain, address, city, province, postal code, coordinates, type
Deliverables
CSV, GIS/spatial, Excel
Feasibility
For organizations with published location data, coverage is typically high.

Compliance and Licensing Datasets

Records of compliance certifications, inspections, or regulatory registrations for specific industries — useful for due diligence, vendor screening, and regulatory monitoring.

Sources
Federal/provincial regulatory bodies, CFIA, Health Canada, TSSA, professional associations
Possible Fields
Organization name, registration number, certification type, status, jurisdiction, date
Deliverables
CSV, data dictionary, source list
Feasibility
Depends heavily on regulator's public disclosure practices.

Supplier and Vendor Directories

Directories of suppliers, contractors, or vendors registered with government or large procurement organizations — useful for sourcing, competitive intelligence, and market scoping.

Sources
MERX, GETS, buyandsell.gc.ca, provincial procurement portals, published vendor lists
Possible Fields
Supplier name, registration status, UNSPSC categories, location, contact (where public), registration date
Deliverables
CSV, Excel
Feasibility
Government procurement data is generally well-published. Private procurement data is not available.

Geographic and Spatial Reference Datasets

Spatial boundaries, centroids, or reference geometries for a specific geography — census tracts, postal codes, health regions, watershed boundaries, and similar administrative units.

Sources
Statistics Canada, Natural Resources Canada, provincial GIS portals, Open Data Canada
Possible Fields
Boundary geometry, identifier, name, province, population data where linked
Deliverables
GIS/spatial (Shapefile, GeoJSON, KML), CSV, data dictionary
Feasibility
Federal and most provincial spatial data is well-published.
